What is Traditional Oriental Medicine?
Traditional Oriental Medicine, also known as Traditional Chinese Medicine, was developed by China's best and brightest scholars. One quarter of the world's population uses Oriental Medicine for their primary health needs. Click here for more information on what we treat. The World Health Organization recognizes Acupuncture's effectiveness in treating, respiratory, gastrointestinal, gynecological and musculoskeletal conditions. Go to the World Health Organization's web site for more information, www.who.int/en/
There are two typical methods employed by practitioners of Oriental Medicine. The practice commonly known as acupuncture involves the use of fine, single use, sterile needles which are inserted - painlessly - into certain points in the body. The second fundamental of treatment is through the prescription of herbal medicinals. Massage, diet and exercise as well as lifestyle changes may also be suggested.
What is the difference between Western Medicine and Oriental Medicine?
Western Medicine treats diseases and conditions by focusing on the manifestation of the disease. Treatment is specific to diseases or abnormalities and their symptoms. Oriental Medicine takes a wholistic approach. Diagnosis takes into account patient symptoms, the appearance of the tongue and the quality of the pulse, as well as imbalances in the patient's body and life, which may have led to the condition, are all considered. Treatment focuses on restoration of balance to the whole person. Oriental Medicine treats the root, or cause of the imbalance and the branch, or symptoms.
Is Acupuncture practiced in Western Hospitals and Clinics?
Many Western Doctors are beginning to see the benefit of Acupuncture as a complementary therapy to western medical offerings and programs are being developed across the country that allow Acupuncture to be practiced in western facilities. Cedars Sinai Medical Center offers such a program as does UCLA and others. Click here to find out about our complementary medical treatments.
Most States require years of study to be a licensed Acupuncturist. California has the most rigorous standards and competency exams in the nation. Go to www.acupuncture.ca.gov for more information and to verify licensure. Some Western MD's have begun to practice a limited form of acupuncture that they learned through continuing education weekend courses in Acupuncture. In California, Western MD's are not required to show competency or educational requirements. Patients should verify training and licensure to ensure that they are receiving the best possible care from individuals with training and extensive knowledge in Oriental Medicine.
